AKRON QUAD
Michigan State travels to Akron, Ohio on Friday, Jan. 18 to compete in the Akron Quad hosted by the University of Akron. In addition to the Zips, MSU will match-up against Central Michigan - the third meeting this season - and Western Michigan. Michigan State is coming off an impressive performance at the Chippewa Open on Jan. 11, where the Spartans competed against Central Michigan, Northwood College, and Cornerstone University.

LAST WEEKEND
MSU looked strong in its first competition of the new year, recording first place in 15 different events. Redshirt junior Kyle Strotbaum broke his own Michigan State record in the 35 lb. weight throw last Friday, with a throw of 18.05m (59ft-2.75in). The men placed first in six different events, including redshirt junior Jeremy Orr placing first in the 60m (6.82) and 200m (21.52), Spencer Beatty in the mile run (4:20.44), Shane Knoll in the 800m with a time of 1:55.59, and freshman Logan Lynch in a three-way tie for first with a pole vault of 4.72m (15ft-5.75in).

The women took home first place in nine events for the Spartans. Some of the first place finishers inlduded Meagan Halliwill, who dominated the competition, finishing first with a weight throw of 18.34m (60ft-2in) - more than six feet further than the second-place finisher. Sophomore long jumper Brittany Howard finished first in her event, jumping a distance of 5.48m (17ft-11.75in), while senior Jackie Walton had a strong night of competition finishing first in both the 60m hurdles (8.53) and the 200m dash (25.59).

WHO TO WATCH FOR
Meagan Halliwill has already thrown further in both meets this season than any of her performances in 2006-07, and is getting close to the MSU all-time record in the 20 lb. weight throw (18.76m/61ft-6.75in), set by former Spartan Erica Bailey in 2007. For Akron, junior Stevi Large broke her own school record and the Mid-American Conference record with a throw of 20.8m (68ft-3in) in the weight throw, last weekend in Akron.

The Michigan State Spartans will travel to South Bend, Ind. on Jan. 25 to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational.
