Spartan Track & Field Travels to Notre Dame Invite
MSU makes first of three trips to South Bend for scored invitational.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track and field team will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the first of three trips to Notre Dame during the 2014 indoor season. The Spartans are set to compete at the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Loftus Center.
The all-day meet is set to begin with the field events scheduled for 10 a.m. and running events slated for 12 p.m. In the first scored meet of the season, the Spartans will look to top the Fighting Irish along with Southern Illinois and Illinois State.

MSU had a strong showing in the first competition of the indoor season at the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open as the Spartans posted 13 individual wins.
Leading the men in the throwing events, Antonio James hit a career-best mark of 18.95m/62-2¼ to take the win in the shot put. He followed up with another first-place finish in the weight throw, posting a mark of 21.08m/69-2. Setting the fastest time in the Big Ten thus far this season, DeVantré Whitelow turned in a first-place finish in the 60-meter dash, clocking a career-best time of 6.72. Also earning an individual win for the men was Jarred Gambrell in the 400-meter dash with a winning time of 50.24, while Austin Sanders paced the Spartans in the 200-meter dash with a first-place time of 21.89. Winning the high jump, Kurt Schneider earned a mark of 2.08m/6-9¾.
On the women’s side, Tori Franklin edged out Michigan's Emily Wee to cross the finish line first in the women's 400-meter dash. Jellisa Westney posted a win in the 200-meter dash, posting a time of 24.95. In the 300-meter dash, Alicia Evans earned an individual win with a time of 39.12. Competing unattached, Katelyn Daniels placed first in the shot put with a mark of 14.60m/47-11.
MSU In The Rankings
Two Spartans are among the nation’s best thus far in the indoor season led by Antonio James in both the weight throw (21.08m/69-2) and shot put (18.95m/62-2¼). Lauren Chorny is currently tied for 39th in the pole vault with a mark of 3.90m/12-9½.
In the Big Ten, DeVantré Whitelow (6.72) holds the top time 60-meter dash. James sits at second in the shot put and third in the weight throw. In the high jump, Kurt Schneider (2.08m/6-9¾) holds the fourth-best mark in the conference. Lauren Chorny and Sarah Birkmeier (3.80m/12-5½) are tied for fifth and seventh, respectively, while Tori Franklin sits in ninth with a time of 56.00 in the 400-meter dash.
The Spartans will face off against in-state and conference rival Michigan in a co-ed dual meet on Saturday, Feb. 1. The meet will be held on the campus of Grand Valley State at the Kelly Family Sports Complex.
