Baker to Redshirt 1998 Track and Field Season

Feb. 6, 1998

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior Kyle Baker will redshirt during the 1998 track and field campaign, as the Spartans continue to build towards the future.

Baker, who holds the MSU indoor record in the 3,000 meters, will sit out for both the indoor and outdoor portions of the schedule. He has exhausted his cross country eligibility, but will be a part of an up-and-coming Spartan track squad which will return practically all of its current roster next season.

"We are a young team and we are building towards the future. When you do that, you have to make some tough decisions. We're sacrificing a lot by redshirting Kyle, but we are doing what is best for the future of Michigan State track," stated Spartan head coach Darroll Gatson. "We have a tremendous freshman class, so bringing Kyle back next year will make us that much better."
