LAST TIME OUT
The Michigan State track & field teams competed at the two-day Meyo Invitational hosted by Notre Dame last weekend. The Spartans had some impressive individual showings on the weekend, as red-shirt Junior Jeremy Orr finished first in the 300m dash with a time of 33.15, and Sophomore Leah Elenbaas placed fifth in the 1000m run, setting a new Michigan State school record, with a time of 2:50.56.
Michigan State began first day action on Friday, as Orr took the 300m dash, while junior Michael Smoot finished the race in third, with a time of 34.29. Junior Shane Knoll brought home a first place finish, running a 2:25.55 in the 1000m. Senior Meagan Halliwill finished third overall in the weight throw, tossing a mark of 18.60m (61ft-.25in), her second-best distance of the season.
Orr started off the second day with another strong showing in the 200m, finishing third with a time of 21:38, while freshman Yury Ratomski also had a top-five finish in the event, coming in fifth with a time of 21.82. Red-shirt sophomore Daniel Lewis finished eighth out of 30 athletes in the mile run, with a time of 4:10.95, and junior Shane Knoll finished the 800m in 12th place, with a time of 1:52.02.
On the women's side, senior Lisa Senakiewich had a good day of competition for MSU, finishing the mile run with a NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 4:46.26, and coming in fifth out of 47 runners. In the 3000m run, sophomore Emily MacLeod finished with a time of 9:38.36 and Sarah Price finished at 9:46.76, as they came in eighth and 12th, respecitively.
Leah Elenbaas is the newest member of the Spartans to set a new indoor school record this season. Red-shirt junior Kyle Strotbaum broke the school record at the Chippewa Open in early January, with a toss of 18.05m (59ft-2.75in) in the weight throw. In addition to the team's strong showing two weeks ago at the Notre Dame Invite, red-shirt junior Jeremy Orr and senior Megean Halliwill both set new marks in the Spartan record books. In the 400m dash, Orr shaved .04 seconds of his previous-school record, as he finished with an NCAA provisional-qualifying time of 46.75. Halliwill finished with a distance of 18.80m (61ft-6.75in) in the weight throw, breaking the school record set by former Spartan Erica Bailey in 2007.
