EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State track & field’s Rachele Schulist and Tori Franklin were named Big Ten Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday, Feb. 17. Schulist was awarded Co-Track Athlete of the Week, while Franklin earned her second-straight Field Athlete of the Week recognition.
Schulist earned her first weekly conference honor after her breakout 3,000-meter performance at the SPIRE Invitational on Saturday. Racing to an individual win for the second-straight meet, Schulist shaved a full 15 seconds off her time to set a new MSU and SPIRE Institute record with a time of 9:06.85. She now owns the top time in the event in the Big Ten and eighth-best time in the NCAA. Schulist is the first MSU athlete to win the weekly track honors since teammate Leah O’Connor on Jan. 28, 2013.
Franklin receives the women’s field athlete recognition for the second week in-a-row after she tied her school record in the triple jump at the SPIRE Invitational. She posted the same exact mark of 13.39m/ 43-11¼ to break the SPIRE Institute record and win her third-straight title in the event this season.
Winning her second-straight and fourth conference laurel of her career, Franklin received her first Big Ten weekly honor after posting the best triple jump mark in the conference in just her first competition in the green and white on Jan. 14, 2012. Her second also came during her freshman campaign when she set the previous school record at the SPIRE Invitational (Feb. 1, 2012) with a winning mark of 13.05m/ 42-9 ¾.
Schulist, Franklin and the rest of the Spartans will have one more weekend of competition before returning to the SPIRE Institute for the 2014 Big Ten Indoor Track & Field Championships. MSU will send members to compete at both the Silverston Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, Feb. 22.
