WATCH: Track & Field Preview
EAST LANSING, Mich. - After a successful indoor season, the Michigan State track & field team is set to begin the outdoor portion of the 2013 schedule at the Raleigh Relays this weekend. The meet will take place on March 29-30 at the Paul Derr Track and Field facility on the campus of North Carolina State University.
The track events will be held on a running schedule beginning at 9:45 a.m. on Friday, while the field events are slated for 10 a.m. each day. The finals of the track events are scheduled for Saturday at 10:15 a.m.
Leading the Spartans on the men's side will be redshirt senior Lonnie Pugh who placed 11th overall at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the men's discus. His mark of 57.24m (187-9) earned him a USTFCCCA All-American second-team honor. Pugh is the current MSU school record holder in the discus with a mark of 58.65m (192-5) set at the 2009 NCAA Mideast Regional and the hammer throw with a mark of 62.82m (206-1) that won him a bronze medal at the 2011 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Also returning for the Spartans will be redshirt sophomore Antonio James who earned honorable mention All-American honors in 2012. He finished 19th overall in the discus throw at the national meet and recorded a career-best mark of 54.60m (179-1) at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary Round. Redshirt senior Kevin Jackson will also highlight the Spartans on the high jump after he qualified for the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary Round with a career-best mark of 2.11m (6-11).
On the women's side, redshirt senior Beth Rohl will be the top returner as she finished fourth overall in the discus at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. She earned first-team All-American honors for her personal-best mark of 56.85m (186-6) at the national meet and earned a bronze medal in the same event at the 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Championships. She also holds the school record in the hammer throw with a mark of 62.87m (206-3).
The women will also be led by sophomore Tori Franklin who was a true freshman standout in the triple jump. She earned second-team All-American honors in her first national meet by placing 12th overall with a career-best mark of 13.0m (42-8). Redshirt sophomore Leah O'Connor will also look to contribute for the Spartans after becoming a 2012 Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She earned second team All-American honors for her performance and posted a career-best time of 10:03.40 at the 2012 NCAA East Preliminary Round.
Next weekend, Michigan State will host the annual Spartan Invitational at the Ralph Young Track and Field Facility on April 5 and 6.
