EAST LANSING, Mich. -
The Michigan State track & field team will continue its outdoor season this weekend (April 9-10) when the Spartans travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State. Action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. ET on Friday with the hammer throw, and 12 p.m. ET on Saturday with the discus. MSU will see competitors from 11 schools currently ranked in the top 25 of the latest USTFCCCA national poll.
Schools with competitors at the Sun Angel Classic include: Air Force, Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Boise State, Bradley, BYU, Central Arizona, Central Michigan, Colorado State, Cal State Northridge, DePaul, Georgetown, Hawaii (W), Houston, Illinois (W), Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas State, Mesa CC, Michigan State, Minnesota, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Portland State (W), Rutgers (M), Syracuse, Texas Southern (M), UC Davis, UC Riverside, UNLV (W) and West Virginia (W).
Last Time Out...
Fighting adverse weather in its lone home meet of the season, MSU concluded action at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday, April 3. The Spartans saw 17 first-place finishes throughout the day in various events. Ashley Lawrence led the team in the throws with a first-place finish in both the shot put (14.27m) and the discus throw (46.87m). Yury Ratomski led the men on the track with first-place finishes in the 400m dash and with both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Although it's early in the outdoor season, the Spartans have already rewritten the MSU record books during the 2010 indoor season. So far, three school records have been broken:

Foster an All-American...
High Jump (1.81m (5-11.25)) - Big Ten Championships
Triple Jump (15.69m (51-05.75)) - NCAA National Championships
Weight Throw (19.75m (64-09.75)) - Grand Rapids Championships
(Deltona, Fla.) was the first Spartan in MSU history to be awarded All-America honors as a triple jumper due to his performance at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Foster is the 50th indoor All-American all-time at Michigan State.
Michigan State's triple jumper, Foster, received his second bid to the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships this year. Foster finished in 6th place with a school-record jump of 16.21m.
Big Ten Champion...
The Spartans saw Foster claim his first Big Ten title this year. Entering the event as the top-seeded jumper, Foster won the triple jump with a distance of 15.59m.
All-Big Ten Honoree...
For his action at the Big Ten Indoor Championship, Foster was awarded his second-consecutive All Big-Ten honors. This is the first time Foster has earned first-team recognition but it is his third overall All-Big Ten honors.
Climbing the Rankings...
The MSU track & field team celebrates six Spartans that are ranked on the latest national poll. Shane Wells (Romulus, Mich.) is currently 25th in the country in the 110m hurdles. Logan Lynch (Lambertville, Mich.), who competes in the pole vault, is tied for 40th in the nation. Lonnie Pugh (Grosse Ile, Mich.) is the top-ranked Spartan with 11th in the discus. Foster is polled as the 19th triple jumper in the country, Cliff Miller (Ann Arbor, Mich.) is 40th in the decathlon and tied for 49th in the high jump, while Shane Knoll (Warren, Mich.) is 60th in the 800m run. For the women; Ashley Lawrence (Troy, Mich.) is ranked 22ndin the discus and Katie Shaw (Lakeview, Mich.) is currently tied for 45th in the pole vault.
