EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Track & Field team will have its first split weekend of the outdoor season at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio and the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Virgina, from Friday, April 21 to Saturday, April 22.
The Virginia Challenge will have a morning and evening session on both days at the Lannigan Field. Friday morning opens with two flights of the women's hammer throw at 10 a.m., while running events of the first day will begin with the first six sections of the women's 100-meter dash at 1:30 p.m.
The second half of Friday night will commence with the finals of the men's hammer throw, the men's and women's pole vault and the 400-meter of the decathlon at 7 p.m. Friday will conclude with the women's 10,000-meter run, which is set to begin at 10 p.m.
Saturday will open with the women's 3,000-meter steeple chase at 9 a.m., followed up with the women's 5,000-meter run at 9:15 a.m. Field events will begin at 10 a.m. on day two starting with the women's javelin. The last half of the day will begin with the 1,500-meter decathlon run and the finals of the women's javelin and high jump. The Virginia Challenge will conclude with the men's 10,000-meter run at approximately 9:37 p.m. and the women's 5,000-meter run will be immediately after.
Jesse Owens Invitational
The Jesse Owens Invitational will also stretch from Friday, April 21 to Saturday, April 22 and the meet will consist of 33 women's teams and 36 men's teams featuring two sessions the first day and a complete day the second.
The women's hammer throw will be getting Friday's events underway at 2 p.m., followed by the championship at 3:30 p.m. The men's and women's javelin along with the men's hammer will take place throughout the first session of Friday's events.
The evening session of day one begins at 7 p.m. and it will feature three events. The night will open with the women's 5,000-meter run immediately followed with the men's. The women's and men's 1,500-meter run will start at approximately 8:20 p.m. and the first day will end with the 3,000-meter steeplechase of both genders around 9:15 p.m.
Day two will begin at 10 a.m. and stretch until approximately 4:40 p.m. The field events will get the final day off beginning with the men's pole vault at 10 a.m. and the women's shot put at 10:30 a.m. The running events will begin with the women and men's 4x100-meter relay at noon and 12:05 p.m. The running day will also end with a relay, the 4x400-meter, of both genders which is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
The next time the Spartans will be in action will be April 27-29 for the three-day Hillsdale Gina Relays.
