EAST LANSING, Mich. - Redshirt senior Beth Rohl was named Big Ten Outdoor Co-Athlete of the Week as announced by the conference office on Thursday. It is the first outdoor weekly conference laurel for the Spartan who is the Big Ten and NCAA East Regional leader in the discus throw.
Last weekend, Rohl recorded an outdoor season-best mark of 57.10m/ 187-4 at the UC-San Diego Triton Invitational. She was the top collegiate finisher in the elite competition, finishing in fourth place overall. The mark is the third-best in the nation and less than one meter off of her personal record.
The New Buffalo, Mich., native adds to her conference honors as she was selected as the 2011 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, becoming the first Spartan to ever be named Big Ten Athlete of the Year or Big Ten Athlete of the Championships in either field or track. She earned her first weekly recognition in 2011 when she was named Big Ten Indoor Co-Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 14, 2011.
She recently earned the honor of 2013 Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of the Year after winning a gold medal in the weight throw competition with a career-best mark of 22.17m/ 72-9 to set a new school record. She also earned Big Ten Indoor Field Athlete of Week on Jan. 21 when she broke the previous MSU record at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Rohl and the Spartans will travel to Columbus, Ohio, next weekend for the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 10-12.
