EUGENE, Oregon - Michigan State freshman Katelyn Daniels made the most of her first experience in a Spartan uniform this weekend, placing second on the discus throw and third in the shot put at the USATF Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
With her placement in the discus, Daniels will return to Hayward Field to represent the United States at the IAAF World Junior Championships on July 24-25.
"This weekend was her first time in a Michigan State uniform and she hasn't competed since the middle of May," said Michigan State throws coach Blaine Maag. "Katelyn warmed up ok today and had fouls in her first two throws, so we weren't sure how the day will finish. However, she PR'd by over two meters in her third throw. She's a gamer; that's for sure.
"After she qualified we talked about how big it will be to represent the U.S. in the United States. Also to be able to represent her family, Michigan State and herself on such a big stage, while wearing the Red, White and Blue, is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. She is fortunate to be in this situation."
On Sunday, Daniels tossed 53.26m (174-9) in the discus for her second-place finish. On Saturday in the shot put, she posted a mark of 15.29m (50-2) to finish third.
