July 21, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Freshman Ashley Stacey of the Michigan State track & field team will travel to Miramar, Fla., to represent the United States Track & Field Team this weekend at the 2011 Pan American Junior Championships.
Stacey qualified for the competition after turning in a second-place leap of 6.21m (20-4 ½) in the long jump at the USATF Junior National Championships. The Riverdale, Ill., native is set to compete on Saturday, July 23 at 10 a.m. in the long jump.
Stacey becomes the second Spartan to compete in the competition in the last two years as Beth Rohl took home a bronze medal form the 2009 Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad. Rohl posted a toss of 54.24m (177-11) in her final throw of the hammer throw to place third overall.
This is only the third time in the 21-year history of the Pan American Junior Championships the United States has hosted the event (1984 and 1999). The event is held every other year with the host country rotating between North America, South America, Central America and the Caribbean.
