Spartans Open 2017-18 Season At GVSU Holiday Open
Sprinters, jumpers and throwers kick off the track and field season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -
Michigan State track and field begins the 2017-18 season with the Grand Valley State Holiday Open on Friday, Dec. 1 at the Kelly Family Turf Building in Allendale, Michigan. The meet will feature competition from the sprinters, jumpers and throwers.
“It’s really a jumping out point. So for us, it’s sort of a measuring tool for how the fall went and where we have to go as a program in order to be successful in the Big Ten,” Director of Track and Field, Walt Drenth, said. “We’re working with each individual and sort of giving them their goals and sort of perspective, but you have a lot of time spent training all fall and then the opportunity to get a measuring stick at the end is important.”
Action will begin at 2:45 p.m. with the men’s high jump followed by the women’s high jump. Field and running events will follow at 3 p.m. A detailed schedule of the events can be found below.
At last year’s Holiday Open, six Spartans took first-place finishes in their respective events - sophomore Taylor Hopp took first in the 200-meter race with a time of 25.07, sophomore Taylor Mullins finished the 600-meter run with a time of 1:37.92, junior Antonio Clarke took first in the 300-meter run with a time of 34.46, junior Riley Norman placed first in the weight throw with a final distance of 20.16 meters and Katelyn Daniels rounded out the first-place finishes from MSU in both shot put with a final throw of 14.92 meters and the weight throw at 19.56 meters.
“Our expectations aren’t much different than they were in cross country. We just want to see progress, we want to see us learn and we want to see an application of the things we learn,” Drenth said. “We want to see us be competitive. Ultimately, those are the things that we’re going to be really trying to pay attention to. Are they engaged? Are they interacting with the coach the way we need them to be for them to be successful? It’s going to be fun to see.”
Following the Holiday Open, the Spartans will continue training before returning to action in 2018 at the Wolverine Invitational on Jan. 13 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
