EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country team opened the 2008 season with a strong performance at the Jeff Drenth Memorial 5K hosted by Central Michigan Friday afternoon in Mt. Pleasant.

"There are a lot of unknowns coming into the first meet of the season since we haven't been together for too long as a team," said director of cross country and track & field Walt Drenth. "To have that many people in the top is good because it gives us a lot of confidence."

MSU senior Shane Knoll took first place with a time of 15:33.3 in the men's race, followed closely by teammate Spencer Beatty who took second place and ran 15:36.3. Sophomore Joe Dimambro took fourth with a time of 15:39.8.

Other top-ten finishers for the men included Ian Girard (15:45.7), Max Goldak (15:48.4), Michael Quick (15:50.1), Aaron Simoneau (15:58.5) and Ian Boyle (15:59.2), who finished in sixth through 10th place, respectively.

In the women's race, Thereseann Zimmerman was the top-Spartan finisher, taking second place with a time of 18:41.7. She was followed by teammates Carlie Green (18:48.5), Rebekah Smeltzer (18:48.7) and Laura Portis (18:49.1) who finished in third through fifth place, respectively. Other Spartan runners finishing in the top 10 were Michelle Mercer (18:56.7), Leah Elenbaas (19:01.4) and Ashley Casavant (18:08.8).

"It was good to see some of our younger runners step up today," said Drenth. "I can't wait to get into the heart of our season."

Michigan State will return to action Friday, Sept. 12 when they host the Spartan Invitational.
