EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartan cross country team got off to a successful start to the 2007 season at the Jeff Drenth Memorial on Friday afternoon from the campus of Central Michigan University.

The Spartans took top individual honors in both the men's and women's races.

Alissa McKaig captured first place in the women's race for the second straight year, with a time of 17:37. On the men's side, Max Goldak took top honors for the Spartans with a time of 15:16.

"Alissa (McKaig) worked hard this summer," said associate head coach Rita Arndt- Molis. "She helped her teammates through the first two miles and then it looked like she was shot out of a cannon."

Two other schools had runners competing along with the Spartans on Friday: Ferris State and host school Central Michigan. The event was unscored among the competing universities but the Spartans clearly dominated by placing more runners in the top-10 and top-15 positions than the other two schools.

The MSU women held down the second through fourth positions in Nicole Bush (17:50), Lisa Senakiewich (17:56) and Sarah Price (17:58). The squad had eight of the top-10 positions and 11 of the top-15 spots for the women's race.

The men had six of the top-10 finishers and 10 of the top-15 times among the day's runners. Mike Quick (15:20), Nick Katsefaras (15:25) and Patrick Grosskopf (15:26) finished in the third through fifth positions respectively for the Spartans.

"It was a jumping off point, but we are excited about the people who did their homework this summer," stated Arndt-Molis. "What we are looking to do is bring our team along and nurture our young runners as we move through the season."

MSU's next race will be the one it hosts, the Spartan Invitational, which is set for Friday, Sept. 14.
