ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country team wrapped up action at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Oakland University on Friday, Oct. 8 at the Katke Cousins Golf Course. Sophomore Kristen Smith was the top runner in the 5k race for the women as she turned in a fourth-place time of 18:17.4. In the men's 5k, the top Spartan was freshman Travis Borchard with his time of 26:50.3.

Freshman Veronica Wilson was the second female runner to cross the finish line when she clocked in at 18:51.3. Sophomore Lauren Calhoun was just behind Wilson as the third Spartan when she finished in 18:57.1. Sophomore Allie Hock and junior Elizabeth Watson rounded out the top five runners for the women's side with times of 18:59.0 and 19:09.2, respectively.

Freshman Sam Aklilu (27:05.3) was the second male to cross, while Brett Burdick (27:09.0) and sophomore Shaka Dukes (27:45.5) were the third and fourth runners, respectively.

The Spartans will travel to Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 16 for Pre-Nationals hosted by Indiana State. Racing begins at 12 p.m. at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, site of the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships on November 22.
