EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State track and field redshirt sophomore Julia Otwell was named to the Capital One Academic All-District second team on Thursday. She represents the Spartans on the District 4 women’s track & field/cross country team.
“Julia has obviously done a great job as a student and has been an exceptional athlete,” said director of track & field/cross country Walt Drenth. “She represents a standard that our program expects out of people. It’s a great honor and well-earned. She does a great job of training, a great job of competing and she is clearly outstanding in the classroom.”
The Traverse City, Mich., native is majoring in biosystems engineering with a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.82. Otwell is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and is a key contributor to MSU’s track and field and cross country teams. She scored points for the Spartans, placing eighth overall in her first-career 10,000-meter run at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Championships.
Otwell also earned her second-straight individual USTFCCCA All-Academic honor for the cross country season, becoming only the third Spartan in MSU history to be awarded back-to-back recognition. She represented MSU at the 2012 NCAA cross country championships in the 6,000-meter race and posted a top-25 finish at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing.
The Spartans continue their season as they are set to compete on June 5-8 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore.
