EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams will begin the 2008 season Friday, Aug. 29 at the Jeff Drenth Memorial hosted by Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant. The women's race is set to begin at 4 p.m. with the men's following at 4:30 p.m.
The women's team is coming off a fifth-place finish in last year's NCAA Championship and is already focused on improving on last year's success.
"Last year was a great and exciting year. We learned a lot," said head coach Walt Drenth. "When we left the NCAA Championships last year, the expectations were already starting to build for this year. Having almost everybody return gives us a chance to be really competitive."
Nicole Bush recorded the best finish in school history at the NCAA Championship by placing fifth with a time of 20:13.4. In addition to Bush, the Spartans have four additional runners returning this season that competed in last year's NCAA Championship.
The men's team is looking forward to making a return to the NCAA Championships after competing in the event in 2006. With a more experienced roster, the Spartans have high expectations for the upcoming season.
"We have pretty good depth and that will be the key to our success," remarked Drenth.
MSU will host the Spartan Invitational, its only home meet of the fall, September 12.
