Cross Country opens at Jeff Drenth Memorial on Friday
Spartans kick off season in Mount Pleasant
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's cross country teams will get their 2014 season underway on Friday morning at the 29th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial. The event will take place just off the campus of Central Michigan University at Pleasant Hills Golf Course, with the women's 5K race scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. start time, followed by the men's 5K at approximately 10:45 a.m. EST.
The Spartans wrapped up preseason camp last week in Glen Arbor and head coach Walt Drenth plans to use Friday's meet as an opportunity to get an early look at the team's depth and assess some of the squad's younger runners.
"Camp went well. We came out of it relatively healthy. This meet will give us a chance to assess some of our younger and developing athletes and also gives them their first taste of a college meet," said Drenth.
The Michigan State women's team enters the 2014 season ranked sixth in the USTFCCCA preseason rankings, while the Spartan men received four votes in the poll. Drenth said he's confident in both squads heading into the season and hopes Friday's meet will be the first step in preparing the Spartans for success throughout the year.
"Our objectives are always the same and that's to be the best we can be," stated Drenth. "We set ourselves up to be good at the end and that's our primary objective. These early meets are stepping stones to get us where we want to be at the end of the season."
