Cross Country Hosts Auto Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational
The meet will begin at 12 p.m. on Friday at Forest Akers East Golf Course.

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State cross country program will host the 24th annual Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational on Friday, Sept. 13. The meet will be held at Forest Akers East Golf Course with college races to begin at 12 p.m. with the women's 6K race, followed by the men's 8K race at 12:35 p.m. The high school and middle school races will follow, as over 5,000 athletes will compete throughout the day.

Competing in both the men's and women's college races are Albion, Alpena Community College, Ashland, Central Michigan, Cleary, Ferris State, Findlay, Glen Oaks Community College, Grand Valley State, Hillsdale College, Indiana (Pa.), Jackson Community College, Lake Superior State, Lansing Community College, Lawrence Tech, Macomb Community College, Michigan State, Mott Community College, MSU Running Club, Muskegon Community College, Northwood, Olivet, Playmakers Elite New Balance, Saginaw Valley, Schoolcraft College, Southern Indiana and Wayne State.
All spectators must park in commuter lot 89, at the corner of Mt. Hope and Farm Lane. A free shuttle will be provided for all fans attending the meet. Admission to the meet is $7 for adults and $5 for students with valid student ID and/or under-18, and there are no pets allowed.

Where We Rank
In the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) preseason coaches' poll, the women find themselves ranked 13th. It marks the 13th-straight year the women are ranked in the top-30 nationally heading into the season. Regionally, the women top the Great Lakes Region entering the 2013 season.
On the men's side, MSU is currently fifth in the USTFCCCA Great Lakes regional rankings. For the first time since 2010, the men have cracked into the top-30 nationally at No. 30.
Last Time Out
MSU opened up the 2013 season at Jeff Drenth Memorial on Friday, Aug. 30 with several Spartan underclassman showing progress as three women and two men finished top-five in the first race of the season.
On the women's side, redshirt freshman Rachele Schulist took first place honors in the 5,000-meter race with a time of 17:52.40. Placing third overall was redshirt freshman Shelby Jackson, who stopped the clock in 18:16.00. Competing unattached, freshman Raquel Serna finished fourth overall with a time of 18:30.60.
Freshman Luke Johnson was the top finisher on the men's side, competing unattached and placing third overall with a time of 15:59.90. Next to cross the finish line for Michigan State was freshmen Max Benoit (16:12.40) and Nick Moon (16:13.70), both competing unattached and finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. The top MSU finisher in uniform was redshirt freshman Josh Kersjes, who placed seventh overall with a time of 16:21.40.
The Spartans will be back in action as they travel to the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28 in Minneapolis, Minn.
