EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State cross country redshirt freshman Rachele Schulist was named Big Ten Female Co-Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Schulist was the top finisher among all Big Ten competitors at the Roy Griak Invitational this past weekend in Minneapolis, Minn.
Crossing the finish line first for the MSU women, Schulist clocked a time of 21:07 to place ninth overall in the women's 6,000-meter race. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native helped lead her team to a runner-up team finish among a field of 28 teams, 10 of which were ranked in the top-30 of the USTFCCCA poll.
It is the first weekly honor for Schulist who redshirted the 2012 season. She made a statement to officially kick off her Spartan career, taking first-place honors at the Jeff Drenth Memorial on Aug. 30 with a time of 17:52.40 in the women's 5,000-meter race.
As a result of MSU's impressive performance in Minneapolis, the Green and White moved up to 11th in this week's USTFCCCA poll. Also, the women are currently the top-ranked team in the Big Ten, as well as sitting atop the Great Lakes Region poll.
After a weekend off, Schulist and the Spartans will compete in-state at the Michigan Intercollegiates. The meet will be hosted by Hillsdale College on Friday, Oct. 11.
