Cusmano, Haines Earn Big Ten Weekly Honors
Spartans sweep cross country athlete of the week distinction
Oct. 9, 2012
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Redshirt freshman Andrew Cusmano and redshirt senior Katie Haines of the Michigan State cross country team have both been named Big Ten Cross Country Athletes of the Week, as announced by the conference office this afternoon (Oct. 9). Both individuals finished tops for the Spartans this past weekend at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships.
Cusmano earns his first career honor after he turned in a first-place overall finish in the Men's Varsity 8K race at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships last weekend in Grand Rapids, Mich. The Macomb, Mich., native crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 25:04.90 in his first race competing as a Spartan. Cusmano marks MSU's first male athlete of the week since Shaka Duke received the distinction on Oct. 11, 2011.
This also marks Haines' first weekly Big Ten honor of her career. Haines, a native of Rockford, Mich., won the Women's Varsity 5K race in a time of 17:36.90 at this weekend's Michigan Intercollegiate Championships. This is the first career win for Haines and her first collegiate 5K race. Haines becomes the first female athlete of the week for the Spartans since Oct. 11, 2011 when Olivia Sydow was honored.
The Spartans return to action Friday as the team travels to Madison, Wis., for the Wisconsin adidas Invitational and Muskegon, Mich., for the Jayhawk Invitational. Racing begins at 12:45 p.m. at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, while the Jayhawk Invitational races will begin at 2 p.m. at the University Park Golf Course.
