EAST LANSING, Mich. – This Friday, Oct. 14, the Michigan State cross country team will gather with 31 of the best teams in the nation at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on the campus of the University of Wisconsin to compete in the eighth-annual Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational Presented by Under Armour.
In just seven years, a once-small competition now draws teams from every NCAA region, and has established itself as one of the nation’s premier collegiate meets. The Michigan State cross country team has been competing in the invitational since 2009, when the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country course opened.
In all, 17 teams which are ranked in the most recent NCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country National coaches’ Poll are competing. The No. 6 Spartan women take off over the 6,000 meter course at 1:30 p.m.
The men’s race begins at 2:20 p.m., which includes the No.22 Spartans. Nineteen men’s squads ranked in the most recent NCAA Division I Men’s Cross Country National Coaches Poll are in the field.
The last time out, the Michigan State cross country team was at the Roy Griak Invitational at Minnesota on Sept. 24, the host course of the Big Ten Championships. The women garnered a second-place finish, while the men finished fifth out of 29 competing schools.
Freshman Holly Bullough led the Spartan women at the Roy Griak with an 11th-place finish, in a time of 22:08. Senior Alexis Wiersma and senior Rachele Schulist followed closely behind with finishes of 22:11 and 22:19, respectively.
For the men at the Roy Griak, sophomore Ryan Robinson was fourth, (25:14). Senior Sherod Hardt helped round out the top 20 for the men with a 15th place finish and time of 25:32.

At the conclusion of Friday’s race, the Michigan State cross country team will return to action on Friday, Oct. 21 at the Eastern Michigan University Classic. The race will take place in Dexter, Mich., and the first race is slated to begin at 4 p.m.
