EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State cross country runner Andrew Cusmano was named Big Ten Athlete of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. The redshirt sophomore finished second overall in the men’s 8,000-meter race at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships on Friday.
Crossing the finish line with a time of 25:56.77, a 5:13.17 one-mile pace, Cusmano finished more than 12 seconds ahead of the next-fastest runner in the field of 98 competitors. He helped lead the Spartans to a second-place finish out of 11 teams competing at the meet.
It marks the second conference honor for the Macomb, Mich., native, as he received his first after winning the same meet in 2012.
Cusmano and the Spartans will be back in action next weekend at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. The meet will be held at the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course on Saturday, Oct. 19 with the men's 8,000-meter race set for 12 p.m. ET, followed by the women's 6,000-meter at 1 p.m. ET.
