Spartans Honored with Big Ten Cross Country Sportsmanship Award
Nov. 5, 2009
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Cross country junior Patrick Grosskopf (Corunna, Mich.) and sophomore Rebekah Smeltzer (Monroe, Mich.) have been named Michigan State's recipients of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award as announced by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday Nov. 4.
The two Spartans join 19 other cross country athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. In addition, the student-athletes must be in good academic standing and have demonstrated strong citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting.
These student-athletes are now candidates for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, as the conference office will honor one male and one female student-athlete from each institution at the end of the academic year.
Rebekah Smeltzer finished third for the Spartans, and 24th overall, with a time of 21:27 last weekend at the Big Ten Championships, hosted by Penn State. Patrick Grosskopf placed fourth on the team, crossing the finish line with a time of 26:44.7.
The Spartans return to action Nov. 14 at the NCAA Regional hosted by Indiana University.
