Michigan State Track & Field and Cross Country Welcome Six for 2017-18
Spartans add four track & field members and two cross country members.
EAST LANSING, Michigan - The Michigan State director of track & field and cross country, Walt Drenth has announced that the teams will welcome six newcomers to the rosters for the 2017-18 season, four track & field members and two cross country members.
MSU welcomes Sophia Franklin, Bella LaRoux, Charley Andrews, Dan Stone, India Johnson, and Maggie Farrell. All six individuals have signed their National Letters of Intent to enroll at Michigan State next fall.
“We are really excited about the fall signees,” said Drenth. “The staff has done a really good job of convincing some really talented student athletes from the region and state to join our program. I am excited to see this group help us get back to the top of the Big Ten soon. Along with the obvious success each has had they have each realized a very high level of success in other sports.”
India Johnson - Hillard Davidson High School
2016 Division I state cross country champion ... 2015 Division I 3200 meter state champion, 10:29 ... fourth at the New Balance Outdoor 5K, 16:53 ... 2016 NXN and Footlocker national qualifier to take ninth and fourth respectively ... Personal record: 17:07 (5K).
Maggie Farrell - Battle Creek Lakeview High School, Battle Creek, Michigan
2016 Division I state cross country champion ... All-state in the 1600 meter in 2015 ... Placed sixth at the NXN Midwest Regional in 2016 ... Personal record: 17:19 (5K).
Track & Field:
Sophia Franklin - Okemos High School - Okemos, Michigan
At the 2016 Division I state championships took second in the pole vault with a jump of 12’3”, finished fourth in the 100 hurdles on a time of 14.44, and took fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.71 ... Took third in the pole vault with a personal best vault of 12’4.75”, and took 4th in the 100 hurdles for a time of 14.56. Personal best: Pole vault 12’4.75, 100 hurdles 14.44, and 300 hurdles 45.43.
“One of our continued objectives is to keep outstanding local student athletes near home,” said Drenth. “We are really excited to have Okemos standout Sofia Franklin become part of our family. Sofia has the potential to become an elite Big Ten athlete.”
Bella LeRoux - Spring Lake High School - Fruitport, Michigan

Charley Andrews - Harper Creek High School - Battle Creek, Michigan
2016 Miss Volleyball award finalist ... 2015 Battle Creek Enquirer female athlete of the year ... 2014 and 2015 Division II State champion in the high jump ... Fourth place in the 800 meter at the Division II state championship ... Personal best: high jump 5’8”, and 800 meter 2:17.
Dan Stone - Frankenmuth High School - Frankenmuth, Michigan
In the 2016 Division II state championships took second in the shot put and fourth in the discus ... Personal best: Shot put 57’6.5”, and discus 160’10”.
