Maggie Farrell Selected To Compete At 2018 Great Edinburgh XCountry Challenge
Farrell will compete on the US team in the Junior 4K event.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women’s cross country freshman runner Maggie Farrell was named to the United States team competing in the 2018 Great Edinburgh XCountry International Challenge, USA Track & Field announced on Wednesday.
“This is a very prestigious selection with a great opportunity to compete on an international stage and represent the USA,” MSU Director of Cross Country Walt Drenth said.
Farrell will represent the United States on the junior women’s 4km team, racing in The Great Edinburgh Cross Country on Jan. 13 in Holyrood Park, Edinburgh, Scotland. The competition consists of four races and the overall winning team is determined by the six best-placed athletes in the senior category along with the four best-placed athletes in the junior races.
The selection was based on Farrell’s performance at NCAA Championships, where she was the first Spartan finisher in the women’s 6K championship race. Her 64th-place finish marked her as the sixth freshman across the finish line out of all individuals, setting a career-best 6K time of 20:26.1.
Farrell had a career freshman year, and was unanimously named Big Ten Freshman of the Year to become the fourth Spartan honor of its kind in program history and the first since 2004. Farrell was named Second-Team All-Big Ten at the Big Ten Championships, placing 13th as the first freshman in the conference across the line with a time of 20:44.5.
