Proctor And Bechina Boost MSU To 5-2 Win Over Pepperdine
Spartan Duo Both Go 2-for-4 With Two RBI
Saturday's win was the first victory for MSU this season, splitting the first two games of the weekend series with Pepperdine, who is now 3-4 on the season.
Both Proctor and Bechina were 2-for-4 with two RBI, each driving in runs as part of a four-run sixth inning for the Spartans, turning a 2-1 MSU deficit into a 5-2 Spartan advantage. Junior left fielder Bechina belted a two-run home run, while freshman catcher Proctor had an RBI single in the frame.
"I thought we made some improvements today. I thought we played better and got some timely hits after letting a few opportunities slip away early in the game," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "Marty Bechina's big home run kind of really got us going and then we were able to string a few more together."
On the mound, senior starter right-hander Ethan Landon went 4.2 IP, striking out six with no walks in allowing two runs while scattering six hits. Sophomore reliever Mitchell Tyranski finished, going 4.1, grounding the Waves' bats allowing just one hit, while striking out five and walking just one, in picking up his first win of the season.
"I thought the pitching was the real story of the day. I thought Ethan Landon threw extremely well and Mitchell Tyranski was just absolutely dominating in four-and-a-third of relief, striking out five, and was in control the whole way. I'm very happy with how we pitched today" Boss said. "I thought we defended well, and didn't have any errors, and we made some things happen at the plate, so I'm just all around very please with how the day went."
After Pepperdine took a 1-0 lead in the home half of the first, the Spartans tied it up at 1-1 in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Proctor, plating fellow freshman, third baseman Zach Iverson, who led off the frame with a walk.
The tie score was short-lived as the Waves scored in the bottom of the fifth on a hit-by-pitch, sacrifice bunt, ground out and single for a run.
MSU's big sixth inning rally was sparked by a leadoff single by senior first baseman Zack McGuire, before Bechina's blast gave the Spartans a 3-2 lead. Junior right fielder Robbie Jones later scored on a Pepperdine error, and Proctor capped the four-run frame with an RBI single to right, for MSU's 5-2 lead.
Tyranski retired the Waves in order in the sixth, eighth and ninth innings, securing the victory for MSU.
The Spartans and Waves wrap up their weekend series on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT.
