BEAUMONT, Texas - Michigan State took a 9-3 lead after five innings, but Kansas State rallied for seven runs in the games final four frames to defeat the Spartan baseball team, 10-9, Sunday afternoon at Lamar's Vincent-Beck Stadium. Junior Kyle Day went 3-for-5 with five RBI and senior Mark Sorensen threw five solid innings to lead the Spartans, who fall to 3-4 on the season. Five games remain on MSU's nine-game spring trip.

Sorensen (1-1), making his second start of the season, shut Kansas State down after allowing three runs on three hits in the top of the first. He allowed just one baserunner over the final four innings. His final line included two strikeouts and two walks.

Day delivered in each of his at-bats with runners on base. He had a two-run single that scored seniors Evan Friedland and Brandon Doherty to pull MSU within 3-2 in the bottom of the third. The Spartans would later tie the game at 3-3 later in the inning on a bases-loaded walk by junior Eric Roof.

Day drove Doherty home against with an RBI single the very next inning to give Michigan State a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Chris Roberts extended it to a 5-3 advantage with an RBI single of his own.

The Spartans took a commanding lead in the bottom of the fifth. Eric Roof, Jonathan Roof and Evan Friedland started the inning with three straight singles push the lead to 6-3. After Doherty's third walk of the game, Gerstenberger reached on an error that scored Eric Roof and put the Spartans up four runs. Day then smacked a two-run double down the right-field line to make it 9-3.

Kansas State rallied for two runs in the sixth inning and another in the seventh to cut the deficit to 9-6. Kansas State would score two runs each in the eighth and ninth inning, with the winning run scored on an RBI single by KSU designated hitter Jason King.

Doherty finished with three walks and three runs scored. Friedland scored twice and had an RBI.

Michigan State, which finished 1-3 at the four-day Lamar Invitational, travels to Baton Rouge for a two-game series against LSU Tuesday and Wednesday. Tuesday's game will start at 7:30 p.m. (ET) and Wednesday's contest is set for a 4 p.m. (ET) start.

NOTES
Doherty's three walks tied his career high, which he set last year on April 25 against Central Michigan. It was also his first multi-run game of the season and sixth of his career...Senior outfielder Dennis Jones made a diving catch in right-center in the ninth inning that would have allowed the tying run to score...Senior reliever Ryan MacFarlane made his first appearance of the season, working 0.2 innings in the top of the sixth.
