ORLANDO, Fla. - Central Florida snapped the Michigan State baseball team's three-game winning streak with a 7-5 victory over the Spartans Tuesday night at Jay Bergman Field. Down 6-1 in the top of the eighth, MSU (3-3) rallied for four runs to cut UCF's lead to 6-5, but the Golden Knights (7-9) added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning to seal the victory. The Spartans return to action tomorrow to face Stetson at 7 p.m. in Deland.
Central Florida responded with four runs in the bottom of the third off starter John Dwan, although two of the runs were unearned.
Dwan (1-1) exited the game after the third, handing the ball over to A.J. Dunn. Dunn pitched a scoreless fourth, but the Knights plated two runs on three hits in the fifth to make it 6-1.
MSU made things interesting in the eighth, rallying for four runs to cut the margin to one at 6-5. Brandon Doherty led off the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a Steve Gerstenberger single, one of his three hits for the game. Both runners scored as Sean Walker nailed a double to right center. Walker then scored on a two-out single to left-center by Eric Roof, and Roof trimmed the lead to one when he crossed home on an Evan Friedland RBI groundout.
The Knights, however, tacked on an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, upping the lead to 7-5.
Justin Weiss came on in the ninth to register the save for UCF, his third of the season.
