DELAND, Fla. - Stetson scored seven runs in the seventh and eighth innings to defeat the Michigan State baseball team, 13-7, Wednesday night at Melching Field. MSU (3-4) jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the second, but the Hatters (11-5) tied it at 6 in the bottom of the fifth. The Spartans collected 13 hits, including a 4-for-5 performance at the plate from freshman right fielder Eli Boike.
Stetson got one back in the second and two in the third off Mike Monterey, who made his first career start on the mound.
In the fourth, Sean Walker drilled a run-scoring double, bringing home Boike, who led off the inning with a single. The Hatters got the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a Kevin Johnson solo homer to left field.
Monterey exited the game after four innings, giving way to Peter Wolff. In the bottom of the fifth, the Hatters strung together three hits to score two runs, tying the game at 6.
Stetson broke the game open with three runs in the seventh to build a 9-6 lead. MSU trimmed the margin to 9-7 in the eighth, as Roof led off with a walk, advanced to third on a Boike double, and scored on a Brandon Doherty sacrifice fly.
The Hatters put the game away in the eighth, taking advantage of two Spartan errors and two walks to score four unearned runs.
Robbie Elsemiller pitched the final two innings to earn his third save of the season for Stetson. David Burns (1-0) picked up the victory, tossing 5.2 innings of relief. Chris Cullen (0-1) took the loss for MSU.
MSU returns to action tomorrow to face South Florida in Tampa at 6 p.m.
