JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - The Michigan State baseball team stormed out to an 11-1 lead and ended up defeating Jacksonville State, 17-2, on Thursday afternoon in Jacksonville, Ala. It was the largest margin of victory this season for MSU, which is now 8-4. Jacksonville State fell to 4-8.

The Spartans were led offensively by center fielder Eli Boike and third baseman Andrew Carpenter as each finished with two home runs and four RBIs.

"Eli and Andrew each had big days and really kick started our offense," said MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. "A.J. threw well to get his first win and we also had a chance to play a lot of guys, which was good. We hope to close out the spring trip on positive note tomorrow against Eastern Michigan."

With the score tied at one in the second, three Spartan doubles led to two runs for MSU. After Andy Johnson doubled to left-center field and Boike drove him in with a double down the right-field line. Two batters later, Jonathan Roof made it 3-1 when he scored Boike with another double.

Boike led off the top of the fourth inning with the first of his two home runs in what would be a sign of things to come for him and the Spartans. After Brandon Eckerle scored on a wild pitch and Bo Felt drove in two more runs with a single, Carpenter belted a two-run shot to left field. With two outs later in the inning, Boike accomplished the rare feat of hitting two home runs in the same inning. This time it was a two-run blast that made the score 11-1.

Carpenter got his second long ball of the day in the next inning with a two-out, two-run homer that extended MSU's lead to 13-1.

MSU piled up four more runs in the top of the seventh inning to make it 17-1.

With the Spartans offense rolling, starter A.J. Achter had plenty of run support to work with. Achter cruised to his first win of the year, going seven complete innings and striking out four while giving up four hits.

Jacksonville State starter Daniel Watts suffered the loss and fell to 0-3 on the year.

The Spartans will close out their spring trip on Friday against Easter Michigan at 1 p.m. in Jacksonville.
