NORMAN, Okla. - Freshman Chris Roberts drove in the game-winning run with an RBI double in the top of ninth inning to lead the Michigan State baseball team to a 4-3 upset victory over No. 21 Oklahoma Friday night at L. Dale Mitchell Park. With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-6 for the year, while the Sooners fall to 15-6.

Michigan State collected 12 hits on the evening, including three from Steve Gerstenberger and two each from Kyle Day, Evan Friedland, Eli Boike and Justin Potes.

With the scored tied at 3 entering the ninth, Gerstenberger walked with one out, and advanced to third on a Day single. Roberts then doubled down the left-field line to drive home Gerstenberger, giving MSU the 4-3 lead. Spartan starter Craig Brookes, who entered the game sixth in the Big Ten with a 1.53 ERA, lowered his average with another brilliant outing. Although he received a no decision, Brookes struck out six and only allowed one unearned run in six innings of work.

Brookes left the game with a 3-1 lead, but the Sooners scored two runs in the seventh to tie the game at 3.

MSU handed Oklahoma starter Stephen Porlier his first loss of the season. Porlier came into the game with a 4-0 record and 1.91 ERA, but the Spartans notched seven hits and three runs off the Tulane transfer.

After the Sooners scored two runs in the seventh off reliever Nolan Moody, Mike Monterey threw three scoreless innings to earn the win for Michigan State.

Game two of the series is set for Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
