STATE COLLEGE, Pa.- With 35-40 scouts looking on, Penn State senior RHP Nate Bump (Monroeton, Pa.) took a no-hitter until two outs in the eighth as the Lions (12-12, 3-2 Big Ten) blanked Michigan State (10-12, 1-4 Big Ten), 8-0. 665 fans watched the home opener as Penn State improved to 21-6 in the last three years at Beaver Field.
After walking the second batter of the game, Bump (4-1) struck out the next five Spartans and retired 11 consecutive batters before hitting a batter to lead off the fifth inning. He then retired the next 11 before sophomore first baseman Ryan Leson broke up the no-hit bid with an opposite field singel to left on a 0-2 pitch with two outs in the eighth. In winning his fourth consecutive decision, Bump walked only one and struck out 10- the fifth consecutive game he has recorded double-digit whiffs. It was the seventh shutout of Bump's career and he now has 297 strikeouts, only two shy of the Nittany Lion career record.
Penn State got to Spartan starter, and possible No. 1 draft pick, Mark Mulder (2-3) in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore third baseman Shawn Fagan (Levittown, N.Y.) led off the game with a walk and two batters later junior right fielder Dan Beers (Endicott, N.Y.) blasted the first pitch over the center field fence. Chad Whitmoyer (Womelsdorf, Pa.) and Jeremy Deitrick (Williamsport, Pa.) followed with singles, and after a force-out, senior shortstop Adam Beers (Endicott, N.Y.) plated both runners with a double to right field. Beers later scored on an error to make the score 5-0. It was all the runs Bump would need.
Adam Beers and Deitrick both finished with three hits, while sophomore second baseman Eric Spate (Northampton, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs.
Penn State and Michigan State square off again tomorrow (April 4) in a double-header beginning at 1:00p.m. Penn State president Dr. Graham Spanier will throw out the first pitch and the first 300 fans at the ballpark will receive a free baseball.
