MSU Baseball Knocks Off GVSU, 9-4

Mike Wagner delivers HR, four hits.

April 14, 1998

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Mike Wagner banged out four base hits, including a home run, and Joe Kalczynski hit his first collegiate four-bagger as Michigan State beat Grand Valley State, 9-4, in Tuesday afternoon ball game at Kobs Field.

Michigan State (15-17, 4-8) banged out 14 hits on the afternoon, while the Spartan bullpen limited the Lakers (16-9) to just one unearned run in six innings. The Spartans overcame an early deficit with seven runs in the fourth and fifth, carrying them to the victory.

Michigan State banged out three homers, as Wagner hit his sixth in the first inning, Gary Zsigo drove one out in the fourth and Kalczynski hit a three-run shot to right field in the fifth. Wagner, Mike Pisani, Tom Hartley, Kalczynski and Ted Demetral all recorded two hits. Wagner led the squad four hits, as he scored three times and swiped two bases.

Freshman David Strunk started his first collegiate game for Michigan State, giving up three runs in three innings on the hill. Senior Jerry Nozewski (1-0) came in with the Spartans trailing 3-1 and faced the minimum number of hitters over two innings, picking up his second career victory. It marked his first win since March 17, 1996. Freshman Josh Axelson came on to provide his best outing of his career, as he successfully was able to locate his fastball and breaking stuff to fan five and not allow a hit in three innings of work. Chris Yens pitched a 1-2-3 ninth.

Wagner opened the scoring in the first with a solo shot to left-center on a 3-2 pitch. But the Lakers seized a 3-1 advantage over the next two times at bat, manufacturing runs via sacrifice flies.

But MSU's offense awoke in the fourth, as six straight Spartans notched a hit. With one down, Zsigo parked his second collegiate homer over the left-center field wall. He was followed by Mike Pisani, who extended his hitting streak to nine games with a double down the right-field line. Tom Hartley followed with a groundball into left field, scoring Pisani. After a Kalczynski single put two runners on, Ryan Leson put a RBI line-drive into right. Ted Demetral got aboard an infield single to load the bases, but Laker hurler Troy Weston (2-1) avoided further damage with a strikeout and groundout.

Michigan State put the game away in the fifth, scoring four times. Mike Wagner opened with a single, moving to second on a walk to Zsigo. After Pisani flew out to the wall in left, Tom Hartley got aboard thanks to an error by Laker second baseman Brad Dykstra, as Wagner scored. Joe Kalczynski then delivered a three-run shot on a lofting drive over the right-field wall, giving MSU an 8-3 lead on his first collegiate HR.

GVSU added an unearned run in the sixth, while MSU finished the scoring in the eighth, as a Pisani singled scored Wagner from second.

MSU travels to Ypsilanti on Wednesday, as the Spartans take on Eastern Michigan. Kimya Massey earns the nod for MSU.
