Baseball Splits a Pair with Michigan

LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State split a baseball doubleheader with Michigan on Saturday at Oldsmobile Park, taking the opener, 7-2, but dropping game two, 6-0.
The Spartans (17-19, 6-9) have now taken two of three from the Wolverines (16-19-1, 6-9) in the series, with the finale set for 1:00 pm on Sunday in Ann Arbor. Freshman RHP John Steiger (1-1, 2.75) will throw for MSU, opposed by Michigan junior J.J. Putz.
Michigan State picked up a 7-2 victory in game one with a solid outing by starter Mark Mulder (4-4), who fanned eight in a seven-inning complete game effort. The eight whiffs moves him into a tie for fifth place on MSUis single-season strikeout list with 86.
The Spartan offense delivered as well, banging out 11 hits while scoring in each of its last five at bats. Junior Mike Wagner went three-for-four with two RBI, including a long home run to left-center to lead off the third inning. Sophomore Joe Albaugh also contributed a pair of RBI, as he went two-for-four with a pair of doubles. Juniors Tom Hartley and Carlos Fernandez also had a pair of hits for the Spartans.
Michigan bounced back in the nightcap, as UMis Brian Steinbach threw a four-hit shutout as the Wolverines took their first game of the series, 6-0. MSU starter Gary Zsigo (5-3) was solid in the latter stages of his outing, but could not recover from a Michigan four-run first inning.
