MSU ROTATION
vs. Iowa: Brian Murphy, RHP
vs. Troy St: Mark Mulder, LHP
vs. Prov.: Gary Zsigo, LHP

SCOUTING REPORT
IOWA: The Michigan State contest will mark the Hawkeyesi first game of the season. MSU took three-of-four from the Hawkeyes (17-30, 7-16 in 1997) last season. This contest will not count in the Big Ten standings.

TROY STATE: Off to an 8-2 start, the Trojans have won six of their last seven. Troy State split a two-game set with Western Kentucky, dropping the opener on Feb. 20, before rebounding to gain the victory on Feb. 21, 11-8. The Trojan offense has been prolific, scoring more than ten runs in six contests, including a 20-run outburst against VMI on Feb. 14.

PROVIDENCE: The Friars boast a 2-1 slate following a three-game clash with Davidson College in Davidson, N.C., on Feb. 21-22. Providence split a doubleheader on Saturday, winning game one 4-1, while dropping the nightcap 7-6. The Friars took the final game of the series in 13-3 fashion. Sophomore outfielder Keith Reed has sparked the offense, as he has recorded two homers and six RBIs this season, including a five-RBI outing in Sunday's victory.

LAMAR RECAP
MSU came away from Beaumont, Tex., with just one win during a three-game set against Lamar, Feb. 20-21. The final contest of the series was rained out.

Feb. 20: Lamar 6, MSU 5

Lamaris B.J. Littleton doubled home the go-ahead run off MSUis Chris Yens (0-1) in the bottom of the eighth to break a 5-5 tie and seize the victory for the Cardinals. Mark Mulder started for the Spartans, giving up three runs over five innings of work. Mulder allowed just two hits while fanning nine. Ryan Leson and Carlos Fernandez both went three-for-four for MSU, while Mike Wagner (2-5, 2 RBI) was strong in the leadoff spot for the Spartans in his MSU debut.

Feb. 21: Lamar 2, MSU 1

For the second straight game, the MSU bullpen allowed Lamar to score in their final at bat, as Lamar pushed across a run against Casey Reader (0-1) in the bottom of the seventh in the first game of a twin bill. The loss spoiled the outing of starter Brian Murphy, who surrendered only a first-inning run during five innings on the mound. Ted Demetral was the only Spartan with two hits (2-3).

Feb. 21: MSU 4, Lamar 0

Spartan sophomore Gary Zsigo (1-0) blew away the Cardinals in his collegiate debut, as he hurled six shutout innings. The lefty struck out nine while scattering three singles during his time on the mound. Freshman Scott Brandell, also making his debut, closed the door in the seventh to give the Spartans their first victory of the season in game two of a doubleheader. The Green and White clung to a 1-0 first-inning lead until the seventh, when Mulder blew the game open in the top half of the frame with a bases-loaded double, knocking home all three runners.

---The Spartan defense played flawless defense during the DH on Sat., as they did not commit an error during 48 chances in the field.
---Michigan State has yet to face a left-hander on the mound, as the Cardinals tossed only righties over their 23 innings.
