EAST LANSING - Michigan State rookie pitcher Walter Borkovich has been named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Monday.
Borkovich earned his first career win by pitching 4.2 innings of scoreless relief in Sunday's 18-13 win over Eastern Illinois. The native of Traverse City got the final out of the fourth inning and surrendered just four hits the rest of his outing. He picked up four strikeouts as he pitched into the ninth inning.
In four appearances totaling 6.0 innings out of the bullpen this season, Borkovich has yet to allow a run.
The honor is the first of Borkovich's career and it's the first time this season a Spartan has garnered a weekly conference award.
The Spartans are currently in the midst of their eight-game spring trip, which will continue on Wednesday when they take on Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m. ET.
