MOMENTUM WITH MSU
Michigan State is coming off an emotional 11-10 victory over Michigan on April 19, as MSU's Tom Hartley hit a two-run HR with two outs in the ninth as MSU wrapped its third win of the series. The Spartans look to ride the wave of momentum in doubleheaders against Central Michigan, Indiana Tech and Siena Heights. On the horizon is a single game in South Bend against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEK
--Mark Mulder getting closer to MSU's single-season strikeout mark. After a start vs. Central Michigan, the junior southpaw will take the mound in South Bend, Ind., for a highly-anticipated matchup with Notre Dame on April 28.

Other Big Ten scores. The Spartans are still alive for the conference playoffs and could get serious help this weekend, as the six schools above them square off with each other. MSU is just two games out of the final Big Ten playoff qualifying spot.

The Indiana Tech doubleheader. Don't say, "Who's Indiana Tech?" They've already beaten national power Notre Dame this season, and knocked off MSU last year, 6-5, scoring four times in the ninth to win it.

HARTLEY REBOUNDS WITH A VENGENANCE
Hitting just .103 when he went down with a hand injury on March 9, junior outfielder Tom Hartley has come back strong since returning to the lineup on April 4. Since that time, Hartley is hitting .353 (18-51), collecting 13 RBI during that span. He also cracked a dramatic two-run HR with two outs in the ninth with the Spartans trailing by one in MSU's 11-10 victory over Michigan on April 19. Hartley hit .500 (8-16) during the four-game set with the Wolverines, knocking in seven runs. MSU's leading hitter last season (.360), the Spartans are 8-6 (6-4 in conference play) since Hartley returned to the plate.

MULDER HAS K MARK IN HIS SIGHTS
Junior pitcher Mark Mulder recorded ten more strikeouts last week, two in a one-inning relief appearance at Eastern Michigan (4/15) and eight in a seven-inning complete game victory over Michigan (4/18). That gives Mulder 86 strikeouts on the season, just 21 shy of Michigan State's single-season record of 107, set by Mel Behney in 1968. Mulder is currently tied with Hall-of-Famer Robin Roberts and Ron Perranoski for fifth place on the chart.

"STAT OF THE WEEK":
MIKE WAGNER
Junior centerfielder Mike Wagner currently leads the team in homers (seven), RBI (29) and steals (eight). That trio of honors has only occured seven times in MSU history since 1958, with the last being in 1995 when Scott Ayotte turned the trick with 13 HR, 60 RBI and five SB. Wagner has been on a roll as of late, hitting .347 in the last 14 games, driving in 14 while collecting four HR and four SB.

YENS TAKING OVER
Sophomore closer Chris Yens picked up first collegiate win in MSU's dramatic 11-10 victory over the Wolverines on April 19 in Ann Arbor. The right-hander has been tremendous over his last ten appearances, going 1-0 with three saves in 10.1 innings of work. Over that span, Yens has posted a miniscule 1.74 ERA, allowing just five hits.

NO MIDDLE GROUND WITH ZSIGO
It has been feast of famine for Gary Zsigo in his seven starts this season. In his four solid outings, the southpaw is 4-0 with a 2.10 ERA in 25.2 innings, striking out 34 while walking 11 and allowing 26 hits. But in his four other starts, Zsigo is 1-3, with a 14.77 ERA in 17.2 innings. However, the sophomore is 4-0 following Spartan losses this season.

MURPHY BREAKS CAREER RECORD
Senior right-hander Brian Murphy broke MSU's career innings pitched record on April 10 in an 8-4 complete-game victory over Indiana. He set the new standard on a groundball to shortstop on the second out of the ninth, as Murphy now has 277.0 innings thrown in his career as a Spartan. He snapped the old mark of 267.1 set by Stuart Hirschman from 1990-93. With 180 career strikeouts, Murphy also sits in a tie for third place on MSU's career strikeout list.

OTHER NEWS & NOTES
--MSU's three wins over Michigan marked the Spartans' first series win over the Wolverines since 1992.

--Mike Pisani also has played in the most consecutive games for the Spartans, at 54. Only Pisani, Mike Wagner and Ted Demetral have played in all 37 games this season.

--Sophomore backstop Joe Kalczynski has thrown out 13 of 23 runners trying to steal on him this season, good for a tremendous 56.5%
--Freshman Josh Axelson couldn't have picked a more pressure-packed situation to get his first collegiate save. The right-hander came in with two outs in the bottom of the ninth against arch-rival Michigan on April 19 in Ann Arbor. With the tying run at third and the winning run at first with two outs, Axelson entered the ball game with MSU up 11-10 after the Spartans staged a ninth-inning rally to take the lead. Axelson promptly got Michigan's Bobby Scales to fly out to left field, securing a critical win for the Spartans.
