EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Alex Troop was named the Big Ten Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for last week’s performance, announced Monday by the conference office.
Troop pitched 8.0 innings in leading Michigan State to a 6-1 win over No. 15 Michigan on May 18 at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field. The sophomore left-hander took a perfect game into the sixth inning and a no-hitter into the seventh inning, chalking up 10 strikeouts while only allowing two hits, tying his career-highs for both Ks and hits allowed, in pitching eight innings. Troop held high-powered Michigan to its fewest hits of the season and its second-lowest run total.
The 10 strikeouts and two hits allowed both matched Troop’s career bests which he also set earlier this season against Campbell on March 17.
A native of Batavia, Illinois, Troop collects his first career B1G Pitcher of the Week accolade and also MSU’s first B1G Pitcher of the Week award since former teammate Dakota Mekkes on March 28, 2016.
Troop’s B1G accolade is MSU’s third of the season, as the Spartans collected one of each award, as senior second baseman Dan Durkin was named Player of the Week on March 20 and outfielder Bryce Kelley was the Freshman of the Week on March 27.
