EAST LANSING, Mich. - Three Michigan State Spartans have been recognized as all-stars in three of the premier collegiate summer leagues in the country.
Right-handed pitcher David Garner (Cape Cod League), outfielder Jimmy Pickens (Northwoods League) and right-handed pitcher Mike Theodore (Alaska League) were all rewarded for their impressive summer seasons by landing on all-star teams in their respective leagues.
Garner, who will be a junior next season at MSU, will represent the West Division at the CCL All-Star Game. Pitching for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, Garner is currently 2-2 and ranks fifth in the West Division with a 2.54 ERA. In eight appearances, including four starts, Garner has struck out 28 batters in 28 1/3 innings.
As a sophomore this past season, Garner was 6-3 with a 3.28 ERA and recorded 75 strikeouts in 74 innings. He was 4-0 with a 3.22 ERA in his six Big Ten starts.
The 2012 Cape Cod League All-Star game will begin at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. Fox College Sports will televise the game nationally with Eric Frede and Lou Merloni handling the play-by-play and analyst assignments.
Playing for the Alexandria Beetles, Pickens was named to the North Division All-Star Team. Pickens leads the Beetles in doubles with 14 and ranks third on the team in both batting (.362) and home runs (5) in addition to his 24 RBIs.
The West Bloomfield, Mich., native, who will be a sophomore next season for the Spartans, was a 2012 All-Big Ten Freshman Team selection after leading the team with six homers and ranking third with 35 RBIs.
The 2012 Northwoods League All-Star Game is for Tuesday, July 24 at Warner Park in Madison, Wis. First pitch is at 8:35 p.m. ET.
Theodore is ranked third in the Alaska League with a 1.45 ERA and has struck out 22 batters in 31 innings of work, including four starts. Theodore (1-1) represented the Blue Team in the Alaska League All-Star Game on July 22. The Bloomfield Hills, Mich., native also was a second-team ABL All-League selection.
Theodore, who will be a junior in eligibility for the Spartans in 2013, compiled a 3-1 record with a 3.51 ERA in his first season playing for MSU in 2012.
