White Wins 2017 Green-White World Series
Team White holds on to win 6-5, with game-ending play at the plate to deny game-tying run
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball's Green-White World Series was won by the White team, two games to one, as they won the series finale, 6-5, Sunday afternoon at a McLane Stadium at Kobs Field.
Sunday's series finale start time was pushed back to let the rain clear. When the weather cleared, the White team won under volunteer assistant coach Jordan Keur's guidance for the third-straight year, as the three-game intrasquad exhibition series wraps up the Spartans' fall action.
"It was a very competitive game today that came down to the last play with the game on the line," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "It was a great way to cap off a good fall. We are excited for the next phase of our team development as we prepare for next February and the 2018 season."
The Green team was down 6-4 in the seventh with two on and two outs, and junior infielder Royce Ando laced a double to left center, but the game-tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game.
The White team erupted for four runs in the home half of the first, adding one in the third inning and one in the fifth. The Green team scored two each in the fifth and sixth frames before just one in the seventh, having its rally thwarted with the game-ending play at the plate.
Team White was led by sophomore infielder Justin Antoncic's 3-for-5 effort with two RBI and two runs scored, while fellow sophomore, outfielder Bryce Kelley was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
The freshmen duo of catcher Scott Combs and utility player Zach Iverson led the Green team's offense, both going 2-for-3, while Combs collecting two RBI and one run scored, while Iverson was 2-for-3 and scored a run. Ando was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
With fall action now completed, the Spartans will start winter workouts in the coming weeks in preparation for the 2018 season that opens in mid-February. Stay tuned to www.MSUSpartans.com for further schedule information.
