Green-White Series Recap

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team concluded fall practice with the annual Green-White Series this past week at McLane Baseball Stadium. In a best-of-three series, the White defeated the Green, two games to one.
In game one, sophomore Jimmy Pickens hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning to lead the Green to a 9-7 come-from-behind victory. The White jumped out to a 5-1 lead with five runs in the bottom of the first, but the Green scored two in the second and two more in the third to tie it at 5.
The White went back on top with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth before Pickens blasted his grand slam in the sixth as the Green took a 9-6 lead. The White could only muster one run in the seventh to fall, 9-7.
Pickens went 2-for-3 overall in the game, while sophomore Anthony Cheky went 3-for-4 with three runs and sophomore Blaise Salter went 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs. Freshman Justin Alleman struck out three in three innings of work to record the win, while junior Jeff Kinley closed out the seventh for the save.
Game two went to the White, 12-7. After being held off the scoreboard for the first two innings, the White scored in every frame until the ninth, including two runs in the third, four in the fourth, and two runs each in the fifth and sixth. Freshman Ryan Richardson led the way at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and five RBIs. Senior Andrew Waszak got the win on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits in five innings of work.
In the decisive game three, the White plated eight runs in the bottom of the second to put the game out of reach early in the 11-4 victory. Junior Joel Fisher and sophomores Ryan Krill and Chase Toth each collected two hits for the White. Toth also had four RBIs and senior John Martinez added three RBIs. Freshman southpaw Anthony Misiewicz earned the win by giving up just one run on three hits in four innings of action. Misiewicz also threw a scoreless inning in game two.
Salter led all players in the series with a .667 batting average (6-for-9), including a homer and a double. He also had a series-high four walks and scored six times.
Pickens posted series highs in homers (2) and RBIs (7) while tying for the most runs scored with six. He hit .636 (7-for-11) overall at the plate. Cheky also had an impressive series for the Green, compiling a .583 average (7-for-12) with two triples.
Richardson hit .600 (6-for-10) with six RBIs to pace the White, while Toth went 5-for-9 (.556). Martinez had a series-high three doubles and drove in five runs.
Michigan State begins the 2013 season with three games in Greenville, S.C., at Fluor Field on Feb. 15-17 against Miami- Ohio (Feb. 15), Furman (Feb. 16) and Northwestern (Feb. 17).
