MSU's Tom Izzo to Coach Big Ten Men's Basketball All-Star Squad

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Tom Izzo, the head coach of the Michigan State men's basketball program, has been named to lead this summer's Big Ten All-Star Team that will play a seven game tour in Europe. MSU players scheduled to participate in the tour will be swingman David Thomas (Brampton, ONT) and center DuJuan Wiley (Detroit).

The Big Ten All-Star team is comprised of one player from each institution with MSU being allowed two representatives because of Izzo's participation as the head coach. The tour will take place from August 8-18 with stops slated for England, France and Belgium.

The Big Ten All-Stars will assemble in East Lansing for two days of training (August 5-6) before departing the USA on August 7. The squad is due back on August 18.

Izzo completed his second year as head man of the Spartans in 1996-97. This past season, he guided the squad to an overall mark of 17-12 along with the program's ninth straight postseason, a berth in the NIT, where the Spartans advanced to the second round. In his two campaigns he has a record of 33-28.

"I'm very excited to be able to coach the this year's all-star team," said Izzo. "In talking with coaches and players who have gone on past tours, they all came away with the feeling that it was a worthwhile trip. Being able to take two or three of our players along certainly is a bonus for our program and their individual development."

Thomas, a 6-foot-7 sophomore-to-be in the fall, played in 23 games as a freshman, three as a starter and averaged 1.0 points and 1.8 rebounds per game. Wiley, 6-foot-9, who will be entering his senior year in the fall, saw action off the bench in 24 games in '96-97 and averaged 1.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per outing.

This summer's venture overseas, sponsored by the Big Ten and Creative Sports, marks the eighth straight year that the conference has sent a men's all-star team to a foreign land. Last year's group, coached by Gene Keady of Purdue, posted a 4-2 mark playing Italian teams (MSU's representative on that team was Jason Klein). All totaled, the Big Ten has compiled a record of 65-18 in such tours.
