Guess Added to Spartan Basketball Active Roster
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State freshman safety Lorenzo Guess has been added to the Spartan basketball active roster, according to a joint announcement made Tuesday by MSU head football coach Nick Saban and head basketball coach Tom Izzo.
With an open date on the football schedule, Saban felt the timing was right for Guess to trade uniforms, for now.
"This was the arrangement Lorenzo Guess and I agreed to last February when he signed a National Letter of Intent," Saban said. "If Lorenzo hadnit played nine games into the football season, the plan called for us to use this as a red-shirt year. He has been a valuable scout-team member but thereis no reason to forfeit a red-shirt year in these final two regular-season games.
"Lorenzo has an opportunity to get exposed to Tom Izzo's system over the next three weeks. If we take care of business on the field and earn a bowl invitation, Lorenzo will rejoin the football team. Bowl practice could be an important development period for him, especially at the quarterback position."
The 6-foot-3, 190-pound Guess will lend depth to the Spartan backcourt, which last week lost shooting guard Thomas Kelley for eight-to-10 weeks with a broken bone in his left foot. Guess, who finished third in the balloting for Mr. Basketball in Michigan last year behind Duke's Shane Battier and Michigan Stateis Charlie Bell, averaged 21.8 points and better than eight rebounds as a senior at Wayne (Mich.) Memorial High School.
