Spartans Cage Wildcats

MSU crushed KSU 75-43 Saturday afternoon at the Breslin Center.

The Spartans trailed 4-2 early in the first half but jumped out to a 28 point halftime lead. They never looked back and lead by as many as 39 points.

Freshman sensation Mateen Cleaves took over the game and showed his leadership in the big win. His 9/2 assist/turnover ratio was his best yet in a Michigan State uniform. Cleaves has been battling a back injury that limited his playing and practice time.

"He's had a drastic improvement," said head coach Tom Izzo. "As Mateen plays he is going to get better. He's not taking as many chances and is realizing that college players are different from high school players. He's starting to realize what he can and can't do. Some of that is hard to coach and he just needs to get more experience."

Fellow "Flintstone" Antonio Smith also had a big night with 16 points and 9 boards. The Flint native lead the team in both categories. Smith played well with all of MSU's guards but you could sense that his game was really on when Cleaves was on the court. In high school the two were teammates at Flint Northern and lead their team to a state championship.

"I think Antonio might feel a little bit more comfortable with me because he's like my brother," said Cleaves. "We've been playing together since our third grade year in elementry school. I know Antonio like the back of my hand."

The Spartans now take a three day break for Christmas.

"Once we got done with finals last week we started practicing quite often so we could get back to basketball," said Izzo. "We have a long ways to go yet, but this sure is a great way to start Christmas." "
