Jan. 2, 1997 Freshman Leads 12th-Ranked Indiana Past Michigan StateFreshman center Jason Collier scored a career-high 25 points to lead 12th-ranked Indiana to a 77-65 victory over Michigan State in the Big Ten Conference opener for both schools. Indiana (14-1), which held a 43-23 halftime advantage, had its lead cut to one point midway through the second half, but converted its free throws down the stretch to record its eighth straight win. Jon Garavaglia netted 15 points for Michigan State (7-2), which had won four in a row. The Spartans trail the all-time series, 56-31, and have dropped nine of the last 10 meetings at Indiana. "I was very disappointed and proud both in the same night," said Spartans coach Tom Izzo. "It's hard to win on the road when you put them on the line 100 times. You can't win in this league when you keep making little mental errors." Indiana extended a 20-15 lead by closing the first half on a 23-8 run. Neil Reed tallied eight points in the spurt, while A.J. Guyton and Collier each had four. The Spartans got back in the game with a 25-6 burst to start the second half. Morris Peterson scored eight points, Garavaglia had six and Thomas Kelley's driving layup cut it to 49-48 with 9:58 to play. The Hoosiers answered as Collier netted nine points in a 13-5 spurt that made it 62-53 with 6:28 remaining. But Michigan State would not give up, going on an 8-1 run that reduced the difference to 63-61 on Garavaglia's three-point play with 3:49 left. Indiana then closed the game on a 14-4 burst, converting seven of eight foul shots along the way. "Our first half play was as good as we've played all year," said Indiana coach Bobby Knight. "When we got the three guards on the floor that was the reason we won the basketball game. Our inside guys did nothing in the second half. We had to get some movement, that's why we brought the three guards in." Andrae Patterson recorded 15 points and eight rebounds, Guyton had 16 and Reed 12 for Indiana, which shot 52 percent (25-of-48) from the floor, but was outrebounded, 40-30. Antonio Smith pulled down 16 rebounds, while Ray Weathers scored 14 points for Michigan State.
