With Minnesota scoring just 16 first-half points, it marked the second time this season the Spartans held an opponent under 20 points in the first half. MSU allowed just 18 first-half points to Kansas in a 75-62 win on Jan. 10. The last time Michigan State held an opponent to 16 points in the first half was against Brown on Nov. 8, 2006.
By holding the Gophers to just 28.8 percent from the field, it was the first time since Jan. 12, 2008 in a loss at Iowa that the Spartans held an opponent to under 30 percent from the floor in a game. Minnesota's 17.4 percent shooting from the field in the first-half marked the first time since a win over IPFW on Dec. 6, 2006, that the Spartans held an opponent to under 20 percent shooting in a half.
With the win tonight, the all-time series with the Gophers is now tied at 56 wins apiece. Tonight's win was MSU's fifth consecutive win over Minnesota and its 10th win in the last 11 games.
The last time the Spartans held a team to under 50 points was against Penn State on Feb. 21, 2008 in an 86-49 victory.
With 10 points, Kalin Lucas scored in double figures for the 13th consecutive game and the 19th time this season. He has 36 career double-figure scoring games.
MSU shot a season-best 58.3 percent (7-for-12) from three-point range.
With 21 points tonight, Durrell Summers recorded his third game with at least 20 points in the last five games. Summers scored 11 of MSU's first 13 points.
The Spartans' eclipsed their rebounding margin (+10.4) with a 42-26 advantage on the glass against the Gophers.
Tom Izzo is now 18-7 vs. Minnesota and 8-2 against Tubby Smith all-time.
