EAST LANSING, Mich. - Keith Appling tallied 17 points as the Michigan State men’s basketball team downed Grand Valley State, 101-52 on Tuesday evening in its first exhibition game of the season.
The Spartans were led by Appling’s five 3-pointers. Branden Dawson led the team with seven rebounds and Denzel Valentine added six. Freshman Gavin Schilling pulled down five rebounds in his first game as a Spartan.
Michigan State gained a big advantage outscoring the Lakers 27-0 on fast break points. In the first of two exhibition games for the season, the MSU bench scored 50 points to GVSU’s 20 point total.
To kick off the second half, the Spartans went on a 26-4 run and went on to shoot 8-11 from behind the arc for the half. In total, Michigan State shot 34-55 from the floor (61.8%) including 14-24 (58.3%) from behind the three-point line.
MSU will be back in action when the Spartans take on Indiana (PA) on Monday, Nov. 4 in continued exhibition play.
