EAST LANSING, Mich. - Durrell Summers scored 30 points in just 16 minutes and Michigan State rolled to a 118-57 exhibition basketball win over Division II Northern Michigan on Wednesday night.

Summers didn't start the game but scored 17 points in the first half. He'll have to play that well or better to hear his name in the introductions this season.

That's a sign of the depth Tom Izzo's sixth-ranked team enjoys with five of its top six scorers returning and 14 players most coaches would welcome.

That explained the pressure defense that Izzo employed, resulting in 23 steals and foreshadowing the kind of tempo that could make this season so entertaining.

With impressive speed and plenty of possible combinations, including a devastating small lineup, there was no chance to lose the tuneup, as happened last year against Grand Valley State.

Raymar Morgan added 19 points, Kalin Lucas had 16 and Chris Allen 13, as the Spartans shot 56.5 percent from the floor, 51.6 percent from long range and were also 40-for-57 at the foul line.

Izzo wasn't pleased with his players' intensity early in the second half and called timeouts to convey that message. But after building leads of 22-4 and 40-10, Michigan State could be forgiven for taking its foot off the gas momentarily against its coach's alma mater.

The Izzone, the Spartans' student section, began chanting "We want tacos!" -- a local restaurant promotion for a 70-point effort -- with :33 left in the first half.

On the Wildcats' next possession, an injury timeout led to two technical fouls and a disqualification for Northern Michigan coach Dean Ellis. The ensuing free throws gave Michigan State a 68-30 halftime lead.

The Spartans' final surge, with multiple defenders diving for loose balls, pushed the lead past 50 points in the final four minutes and to 61 in the last possessions.

Marc Renilique led the Wildcats with 24 points. Raymont McElroy added 18 for the visitors, who lost three of their top six players this week to an NCAA ruling.

Northern Michigan had 30 turnovers and just 22 baskets.

Michigan State will play its second exhibition game Monday against Lake Superior State and will open the regular season by hosting Idaho on Nov. 16.
