Michigan State out-rebounded St. John’s 54-33 and it is the second time this season the Spartans have had a 20-plus rebounding margin in a game this season. Bridges led the way with 15 and Nick Ward added a season-high 11. The freshman duo are the first pair to have double-figure rebounding totals in a game since Deyonta Davis and Matt Costello did last season vs. Northwestern (1/31).
Michigan State held St. John’s to 30.8% (20-65) shooting from the floor for the game. It was the lowest opponent field goal percentage of the season and MSU has now held four out of five opponents under 40 percent, good for a field-goal percentage defense of .370 on the season.
Michigan State closed the first half on a 10-2 run over the final five minutes to take a 32-29 lead into the break. Later, up 55-53 with 8:22 to go, MSU went on 17-4 run down the stretch to open up a 72-57 lead.
Miles Bridges registered a double-double in the first half, scoring 14 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Bridges finished with a game-high 22 points and season-high 15 rebounds.
On his return to the Bahamas, Tum Tum Nairn Jr. matched his career high with 13 points, including knocking down a career best three 3-pointers.
